    LOST BY THE SEA

    Locked in the cellar
of a lighthouse by the sea
lives the ghost of a mistress
    who once roamed free.
    She hides in the shadows
    and lurks under the stairs,
    throwing bolts of lightening,
    beacons and flares.
    The house begins to rumble
    the windows rattle and shake
but the house is standing strong and tight
near the ocean by the lake.
The house is old and tarnished
    withered from the rain,
    from the storms, the waves,
    the heartache and the pain.
    But atop her house
at the end of the stairs
    there shines a mighty beacon
    on the horizon it stares,
    to signal out a message
for lost ships in the night
to bring them back to safety,
    guided by its light.
But the mistress who once lived here
    protected by the light,
    still grumbles under the stairway
    no surrender in sight.
She threatens all who chance to tread
    troubled waters from the sea,
sending out her message she cries,
    steer clear of me.
When lost one night in torent seas
came a ship of the grandest hue,
    guided by the glowing light
her sails cast high she flew.
    Straight past the lighthouse
    to safety she was led
by the brightest beacon in the sky
    to calmer seas she bed.
The mistress found her lighthouse cold
    empty from within
as the ship came close and filled the light
    with warmth and chagrin.
She scorned her fury with lightening bolts
    and rumbled with the sky
    sounds of screeching painful heartache
fell on the water as she cried.
But the lighthouse standing strong and tight
    took everthing in stride
    protecting the mighty ship
    resting peaceful by its side.
    The mistress of the lighthouse
    restless soul from within
    waits alone under the stairs
for the next ship to come in.
    She waits forever prisoner
for her heart is lost at sea,
    for love of a lighhouse
she will never again be free.
    Locked in the cellar
of a lighthouse by the sea
still lives  the ghost of a misstress
    who once roamed free.

I live on Martha's VIneyard, and as the ferry from America turns in to Vineyard Haven, at night, I can see, off on the right, a blinking light, the West Chop Lighthouse. Its beam sweeps the waters, and to passengers on boats out there it seems to light up for an instant, then disappear. That’s because the rotating beam, scanning the horizon, passes swiftly over every passing ship, then moves on. As I watch it blink, I imagine there is also a kind of lighthouse in my mind, embedded in my b

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.
