    Poem Commentary

Written in memory of a friend, Joel, who died before we graduated our senior year (1994).

    Mad at It All

    I'm mad at the world

    that took him away

    before I knew

    much more than his name

    I'm mad at the path

    his life had to take

    that put his young life

    as such a high stake

    I'm mad at the teachers

    whose classes don't end

    who knew him as student,

    but never as friend

    I'm mad that the flowers

    still grow in the rain

    growing in beauty

    they feel not our pain

    They die on his grave

    that spells out his name

    I'm mad at the faces

    I see with a smile

    not knowing just how

life can pass in a while

    I'm mad at the clock

    that keeps ticking on

    mad at the cold world

    for still living on

I'm made because I knew him

mad at what I didn't know

    and because of this anger

    these empty tears flow

    I'm mad for my friends

who knew him like a brother

    mad at the night sky

that was that night his cover

    I'm mad at the ground

    that holds his remains

    and angry that our hearts

    will never feel the same

    I remember his shy smile

    I remember it too well

and I'm sorry that so soon

    his life whispered 'farewell'

    I'm mad with the ones

    who's anger must rage

    mad at the world

to keep us here in this cage

I find myself re-reading this poem about Joel on the day of another beloved friends memorial service, Paul. So many differences but the one similarity is the pain with loss. Joel died a young man, the year we were meant to graduate. Paul died a mature man, 62 but still in the peak of his life in so many ways. Joel I knew, but did not know well. Paul touched my life in so many ways, first as a family therapist working with my own family and then....years later as a supervisor who constantly challenged my thinking and made me a better person and a better therapist. While Joel was quiet and shy, Paul was loud, opinionated, blunt, outspoken and to the point! Each had their beauty and each death is a loss. With Joel's there was such a sence of tragidy, with Paul's there was such a sence of celebration over the full, rich life he lived!

Wow! What a tribute. I lost my Best friend In a car wreck in '02. Still haven't come up with words worthy enough to honor his memory. He was only 23. Great write. All the best -Marion-

Thanks, I bet working on a poem for him would bring some healing. It's not always in the finished product, sometimes it is in the process of getting it out! Best of luck to you and thanks for sharing your story with me and how my poem touched on your own strong, deep feelings of loss

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.
