Muse of the World

    Muse of the World

    Darkness covers the land,

    There’s danger in the air,

    I have a sickening feeling

    Inside coming out of nowhere,

    I’m trapped in a world

    That doesn’t seem to care,

    But there is some truth

    That I know is real . . .

When I open the door to the past,

    Rage fills inside my head,

I try to control my present

So more people won’t be dead

I want the hurt, I want the pain,

    I want to be driven insane . . .

    By you . . .

There is an answer out there somewhere,

It is hidden only by us,

We pass it by and it

    Gets trampled in our dust,

You may spend your nights dreaming

And the nightmares never end . . .

Don’t close your eyes for too long . . .

Hatred, it’s the predator of life,

It’s the price we’re forced to pay

For all the love we give away,

We can never love again unless

    Our enemies become our friends?

Good men die under the sun

Carrying the rest of us on their backs,

Guilty ones kill on the run,

    Hiding from the truths ruthless attack;

I’ve learned the hard way as the cold

Facts were pounded into my brain,

Just you open your hearts and

Listen to me for once . . .

    Justice doesn’t exist unless

    You have enough cash,

    They’ll laugh while you

    Suffer from the whiplash,

I need to travel this world to see

    What I’ve been longing for . . .

I believe in the love that you hide,

I believe in my strength when I’m by your side and

I know that it can raise us above this life . . .

Blindness, it’s the disease of the strong,

It’s the question inside every romantic’s song,

We’ll never conquer the evil inside unless

You turn around and love me . . .

Many have the desire but not

    The strength it takes inside

But there is nothing you can do

    When the world makes you run and hide;

I need to find someone to stand

Behind me and set my illusion free,

I want to kick in the teeth of

All of those who deny me . . .

Fury, it fills inside my heart,

The dues I’ve had to pay have almost torn me apart,

I’ll never learn to love unless you

Show me what life is made of . . .

I will never be strong until I

Can finally hold you close . . .

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
