    Poem Commentary

this was something i wrote about meadow voles for my science class.

    Night in the Meadows

From my nest of grass and leaves,
I see the moon is out; a shining silver against the black.
    Scampering along the grass-hidden tunnels,
I forage for the food I eat.
Greens in the summer, grains in the winter.
Grasses, flowers, leaves and roots, my favorites' clover and plantain.
    Digging burrows when I'm full,
    Running, swimming, diving and hiding.
I sense it! An owl, a hen.
Run to the tunnels and escape, or hide in the shrubs and blend in?
She sees not in color, but in all directions.
She's looking this way; I will hide.
She hears every sound; I must not move.
    She's noticed me.
She flies without flapping, slicing through the air.
    Coming towards me.
    I must escape! Run!
The entrance to safety so close. Just a few steps away.
No! She's so close I can feel her breath. No!
    Run! Run!
Her talons so powerful on my neck.
    I thrash, I fight,
    But she's got me.
In her talons, I soar to the sky.
