Night on the Farm

Poem Commentary

Moods from my past life in Dixie.

Night on the Farm

Some ‘ole tune croons from the 'ole radio..

Crazy…crazy for thinking…

Candles flicker darkly amidst cornered spaces

Bare toes sachet across creaky timber

Outside a lone bird bellows his haunting song

The air crackles as a distant storm approaches

Faint smells of aqua fill the atmosphere

A rustle of leaves stir along the overhang

The heavens turn angry, clouds erupt, splintering the sky

Mammoth drops pursue as if chasing the veil away

Clattering, crashing, the downpour, spouts and spurts on the ‘ole tin roof

Swirling off gutters, into pails and waterbearers, all

As quickly as it swells, the tempest settles out

Quirky rodents dart in and out of secret passages

‘Ole farm cat perks up on the porch rail

Geese squawk along the terrace path behind

I really enjoyed this channeling of atmospheres to create a rich setting and mood, one so three dimensional I swear that I could smell the rain as it cut loose...! Very nicely penned piece!

I am charmed that you found "Night on the Farm" and enjoyed it. I lived tis experience on the old farm I lived on as a young girl, hence the "realness" felt in the poem. many thanks ;-)

I grew up in a place that was in this poem and it was nice to relive it in these words. I am so grateful that you enjoyed living in the memory place, as well, even though it was only a brief poem. ;-)

Thanks for reading "Night on the Farm" and your kind words for it. I am sure that it brings back happy times for a lot of people, as it did for me.

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.
