    Night Terrors

    Night Terrors

Darkness comes yet I'm wide awake
    The time, the hour,
Matters not, not even for my own sake
Not a hot bath, nor a warm shower

    I beg and I plead
Dear Goddess, it's sleep I need
    Night turns to dawn
    I toss and turn
Yet not so much as even a yawn

After so many days and nights of this
    Sooner or later
    After losing my mind
    I finally shut down
    I go to the abyss

Just like Alice I fall into a hole
    It's not a nice place
    It wants my very soul
Too late now, even when I try to race
    To get the hell out
    Of this frightening space

    Monsters, demons and creatures
    Implacable things
    With hideous features
    Filthy talons, batlike wings
    Rancid breath,
    Spittle that stings

    They're after me, I don't know why
I just know they don't give in
Without one hell of a try
What did I do? What was my sin?
    This is obviously hell
I scream, but can't hear my own cry

I try so hard, I run like the wind
    Yet my limbs don't move
    They don't even bend
How do I leave this horrid place?
Get me out of this fucking space!

    Eventually, after seems like forever
My mouth opens and the sweat it pours
    I scream and I scream
Trying to get out the doors

    Night terrors I'm told
I've had them my whole life
    Since just 2 years old
It's more then forty years later
    Why, still, so much strife?

I don't want to close my eyes
    I don't want to sleep
    It's too freaken scarey
I go down way too deep

Darkness comes yet I'm wide awake
    The time, the hour,
Matters not, not even for my own sake!

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.

    T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) American-English poet and playwright.
