Nightmares

Poem Commentary

Don't you just hate to be awakened by a fearful thing that was after you?  I have had nightmares since a child having fever accompaning pneumonia and other times as well.  Even the things that you feel safe with become terrors to you as they attack you, like being swallowed by a cow while frantically scramblig up a tree to get away!  Or being run down by race cars on a racetrack and unable to move!  Or sinking in quicksand!  It becomes death defiling when it happens and shouldn't be wished on anyone.

Nightmares

There is nothing even imaginable, that you could or would describe
That overcomes your consciousness, that you would rather hide.
What brings them on we'll never know, what we did to cause an error
Within our mind we always find, these things of raging terror!
Some seem to think, what we last ate, before we went to bed,
Might have had a demon in it, that went straight into our head.

I am inclined to wonder tho, if it may be things we've said,
That slowly builds within our mind, or like something we have read.
It remains within our inner thoughts, till our body is relaxed
Then released with so much violence, that our very heart is taxed!
We are overcome with reality because they seem so real
Our flesh can't hide but only yield, to emotions we can feel!

A dream may be a pleasant thing; tranquil and filled with love
A wish of hope and comfort, sent from angels up above.
To warm our hearts with an inner peace, so that we'll survive
To share a love with one another, and be glad we are alive.
But just where does a nightmare start, as it seems to cross the line
Invading our emotions is your guess as well as mine?

How much can a body take, awakening drenched with sweat;
A repeat of that very same dream, becomes more awesome yet!
And a nightmare is more awesome still, when it is in color;
It can make the scene's event, more vivid than any other.
Books record that words have given, meanings with a clue
As the mind perceives, and then releases, it's own particular view.

We as mortals can only wonder, of the things that we don't know
About awareness of ourselves and just what makes it so.
Things that test our patience, or fill our hearts with woe;
Amazing things of mystery, even ones that come and go.
But one in particular, I'd like to stop and help to save my hair
Is the thing I think I dread the most; it's called a bad NIGHTMARE!

Good Job! My but I hate a bad nightmare also. Especially the ones that make you feel like the monster is in the room after you awoke. You said it all here.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.

Aristotle (384 BC-322 BC) Greek philosopher.
