Poem Commentary

There are so many homeless and
so many children out there alone, please
hold out your hand and invite them in
or help the ones you can.
Tissue warning!
Merry Christmas!

Nobody's Children's Christmas

Nobody's Children's Christmas

Christmas is glittering all over town.
People are rushing in and out of stores all around.
Bright lights and heavenly music abounds.
As the Church bells ring out the Christmas sounds.

In a nearby alley two children broken and alone.
A brother and small sister crawl into a cardboard box they call their home.

Small, frail, shivering and bare, with just flesh, remnants of clothes and bones.
So cold the young girl has gathered up
some stones.
As she lays them all around.
The young boy sneaks in without a sound.
He has caught something to eat and hands half of it to his sister, who gives him a frown.

The sister looks up to the skies
and they fold their little hands.
Their song is a soulful cry as they say a
prayer with closed eyes.
"Thank you dear Lord for this day and for
sending this food running our way."
"We are homeless and we don't have much but dear Lord we have this day's lunch."
"Thank you dear Jesus for my brother."
"At least we have one another."
"Amen"

Now with their meal eaten.
In the freezing coldness they crouch close
together down beaten.
As heavy winds begin to blow.
Blackness of night closes in and it begins
to snow.
Shadows fall all around as the brother takes
the sister into his arms and says:
"If I am gone with the morning's light,
I want you to hold on tight."
"I'll watch and wait for you in heaven from
God's bright light!"

Little sister snuggles closer with tear stained eyes and says"
"Don't give up hope, it will be all right, we'll both be here in the
morning's bright sunlight!"

Smiling she hands him a gift, a stone and
says: "Merry Christmas!"
"I Love you!"
They fade off to sleep as star shines down
upon their cardboard box,
keeping them safe with the brightest of light.
Blessed Be Dear Children of this night!
