Ode to the Weed of the Sidewalk

Ode to the Weed of the Sidewalk

Teach me, oh weed, your ways of life and living,

The way you come right back when brought low;

The way you live in so small of an area,

But are so tall and strong to survive it all.

You grow in the middle of this lifeless walk,

Rearing your head and crying life for all.

Most see you as a menace, to grow there and exist,

But to me you’re a symbol of strength, of life.

You outlast them all, unfazed by everyone’s tries,

No matter how strong they think they are.

Your green life and existence still shines bright,

Even when surrounded by gray lifelessness.

If only I could be like you, unhurtable,

Tall, strong, full of life, able to withstand it all.

May your strength be a symbol to all,

May they all see you for what you are,

Not something to be hated and destroyed,

But life and strength incarnate.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.
