Poem Commentary

On a more somber note

Of This World I am Not

Of this world I am not

For my eyes see little of

the things promised by

those that speak of love and

 powers that would protect us

from the evil forces of darkness.

Of this world I am not

For my heart aches for those

that huddle by the dim fire of

a rusted ash can as snow and ice

stiffen the grimy clothes

 upon their backs.

Of this world I am not

For try as I may I cannot justify

that which allows twenty thousand

innocent children to die each day of

starvation as others gorge themselves on fatted

calf with no thought of those that perish.

Of this world I am not

For in spite of the beauty that

surrounds me I fear it is only

a thin cloak of deception providing

shelter for the pain and

suffering that dwells within.

Of this world I am not

For as each day dawns and the sun

bathes my world in the many blessings

of a superficial Eden like existence I feel

despair in knowing that others must suffer without

so much as a glimmer of hope to sustain them.

Of this world I am not

if I cannot find it within myself

  to give rather than take

to sacrifice rather than hoard

to feel others pain rather than my own pleasure

“To be in this world but not of it.”

  is the solace I seek

I know. Truely Charlie, I do know. Thank you for sharing this with so many. I would hope that some humanity should come from this piece- but, unfortunatly, the words will probably be forgotten when another poet is clicked on, by many-the ones who need remember thses words. Not to me though, ok? never. There are others who will remember this work as well. They are the ones also, not of this world- and still clinging to 'maybe someday..' thanx, hugz, Maddi

I hope with all my heart that you are right about the "others who will remember". Thanks for commenting and understanding the message.

How many more times must it be said before we all take notice? Thank you for commenting.

“To be in this world but not of it.” is an ideal that some aspire to, but few ever achieve..yet how much better we all would be for the work...An intelligent heartfelt write!

Such passionate write should be read by thousands, especially those whose spiritual state is abandoned. I love the imagery and the sharp hint of spice that you always seem to add. You are an incredible writer Charlie!

Sorry, it should read "so evocative", not "to".............

Got it.

Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.
