Old Man Walking Old Dog

Old Man Walking Old Dog

He laboriously passed one foot before the other,
the small, black dog straining to walk,
yet moving enough to keep the leash straight
along the familiar Central Park South sidewalk,
where years ago he was a successful middle-aged business man,
walking brskly down the blocks
for dinner at home,
after a long, tough day.
The dog at a time too had more to look forward to:
tossed balls, rolling on the living room carpet, hours at the park.

Now they perform their dance,
their last rite.
One day,
One will,
  be gone

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
