Once I Knew

Poem Commentary

There is a person that all of us know, that we wish we could have their insight and wisdom. They may not be the most sought after person, but when we speak with them we gain from their views on subjects and we see why people are drawn toward them. In the end, there are not enough kind words that can be said about this person...and we all wish that somehow what they knew, we could know, and we could pass on to someone else.

Once I Knew

Knew a man before,
  so full of life,
took little, gave more,
  such a beautiful wife.

This man, humble, bright,
  sought not fame,
true visionary, surpass our sight,
  God given, his name.

Quietly came, then went,
  not much did he say,
labored for a mere cent,
  went about his way.

Knew a man long ago,
once I saw what he knew,
harvest from what you sow,
  his visions weren’t so new.

This is what I learned,
what it was that he knew,
cannot be bought, nor earned,
we are to love – me n’ you.

He stood tall, not too proud,
  hung from a cross,
there so quiet, not loud,
  so many, still lost..

Long, last march, to the grave,
  bag pipes, as they play,
Jesus died, rose, still saves,
His eulogy - words He’d say.

Wow, I love this one. I'm so glad u shared this piece with us. I'm truly touched and Jesus is good!

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
