    Poem Commentary

This is based on a young man that I know who was tragically killed at a young age.

    One Shot.....

One shot, one second, one life

Darkness fills the area, light struggling to come in

Metal pierces the air, searching for who it might end

No name, no choice, only going as directed

A face, a name, a victim, end comes unexpected

A weapon that brings peace in war and war in peace

A tool of rage, of senseless acts, will it ever cease?

The sound of a bang, cracks the sky, lands in flesh

Breath ends now, destination a place of eternal unrest

One shot, one second, one life

Mama’s baby, brother to some, no longer here today

The sound of laughter turns into crying, a life taken away

It took one shot to take away good times and bad

One shot to make us realize the time, he never had

One second, a short eternity, that can decide your fate

Life shortened to a little dash, in between two dates

In a second, enough time for man to fire a shot

A realization of what was in life, and what was not

A second to make a decision, to turn your life to Him

A second to erase the scars, before your life comes to an end

It’s never too late to give it to God as long as you’ve got breath

Do it now, you can’t decide when your life will be called by death

A young man’s gone, please listen to the story his life told

In a moment, a twinkling, you can be taken, never too young or old

Give your life to God, have a keeper from above

We know not the hour of our demise….

….No shots, one second, one love.

I was incarcerated at the age of 19 for 10 years and I didn't know if I was going to to live or die in that Facility. My dad died in 1997 my mom in 2003. I made a promise to god that if he pulled me through all of the stress and pain and physical dangers that I would never return to selling drugs or committing crime again. He kept good on his end and to this day make good on my promise unlike so many young black males who get out and return or don't come home at all. I feel the poem in it's totalitly
