Pain

Poem Commentary

I was probably seriously depressed when I wrote this; I know I was angry - the reasons don't matter. Still it says things I really do believe: that each of us has a purpose; that we cannot die - except possibly by our own hand - until that purpose is fulfilled. I wish I could find my own purpose - I'm ready to be quit of this world.

Pain

I believe that each life has a purpose
A meaning we choose before birth
A lesson we set for ourselves
Or a debt we must pay here on earth

Tell me what I must yet learn
What purpose I somehow forgot
What karmic tie I must burn
'Ere I can return to my God

... I'm tired

What is my purpose?
What must I give?
What must I learn?
Why do I live?

I can sometimes feel Death hover nigh
The Angel I think I love best
His breath brushes my cheek in a sigh
But I can't yet return to my rest

God, show me the way to come home
Else give me the peace that I crave
Give me a reason to live
Or let me crawl into my grave

Yes, you do bring a simple honesty to your poem here in such a way that even this old agnostic can find no argument.

This is a lovely poem and crafted well, my new friend. Dwell in love, peace and freedom, Olan

Thank you, Olan. That means a great deal to me, coming from you.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.
