    Pick Up the Cost

    Pick up the Cost

    How is it possible
    America once thought invincible
    Now finds itself vulnerable
    How highly illogical

Our nation that touted itself to be
    One of devout Christianity
    Yet in religious vanity
    Bought into the insanity

    That it could through legality
    Make righteousness a reality
All the while failing to see
Righteousness is a choice to be practiced openly

So until we get with what some call the golden rule
We teeter on the tightrope of self righteous fools
Who is quick to point out the mote in our neighbor’s eye
While the beam in our own we vehemently deny

And now in a time of unheard of bailouts
Amidst all our insecurities and doubts
We still worship the gods of profit and greed
Choosing the rich shareholders instead of those in need

Once again proving we love abusing
Those who battle price hikes not of their own choosing
In a run away economy that out priced itself needlessly
    Sinking a once thriving economy

    Into an ever deepening rut
    Through wealthy favored tax cuts
    Who ever increased prices
    Making for the poor sacrifices

As a routine way of life
    Hardly inspiring or nice
    2.

    Yet we as sheep blindly
    Follow along meekly
    As our pockets they gouge
    We no longer say ow

    Numbed by the placebo
    Of not wanting to know
    How wrong things really are
    And unequal by far

    And in all totality
See how greed has destroyed our economy
Yet we as a people humbly
Accept it as how it has to be

    While the filthy rich unashamedly
    Ask for a bailout arrogantly
So they can further the cause
Of maximum profits at little cost

    But what can I say
    Most want it this way
Because we love promoting profit and loss
And the poor and working pick up the cost

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
