Picture Book

Our cover is deceiving.
A picture perfect family.
What they don't know is that
Mommy and Daddy don't love one another
as much as the pictures portray.
Mom likes her happy time
when she locks the door to her bedroom,
and hot boxes, killing the little brain cells she has left.
Dad needs his bottle,
as I watch him waltz to the bedroom
to join Mom.
Our cover is a fake.
What they don't know is that
Mommy and Daddy
forgot to feed me
one too many times.

That's strong - it's so hard growing up in a dysfunctional family, especially when it tries so hard to appear healthy to the world and to themselves. Well done :)

I'll never understand why people make a greater effort to maintain appearances than they do to maintain a genuinely committed relationship. You've covered it excellently here.

No kidding. That's a better way to look at things... Thank you.

Oh God- this made my stomach knot. Sometimes we forget how our tangles with our own problem affect the people we love and need us the most. Thank you for the perspective. I appreciate that.

Great write, depicting an all too bitter truth. The little ones suffer when we get caught up in our dysfuntional nonsense. We created the image of the perfect family with the 2.5 children behind the white picket fence. Maybe when the stats came in and they saw that the perfect American family consisted of 2.5 kids they should have realized such a formula was headed for disaster. I have worked closely with the kids who are forgotten because mommy and daddy are trying to live up to unrealistic expectations.

I love this comment that you left me. It's beautiful. And the children, what some people don't realize, are the future. So sad when our future is left behind...

When I grew up watching the Brady Bunch ... my group sat around eating our cheeze whiz and crackers and we knew the clean, happy, perfect weekly show's endings were not like that in most homes, our home.... but still we wanted to play pretend until the end of the episode hit us in the face with another dose of commercials, maybe, cheeze whiz and crackers. Your home life is too common, as the children of today, raise themselves... call them serial kids, not funny they live on cereal, they do ... in lower, drug addict, NY, and upstate, USA. I'm so grateful that you have a computer, and a wonderful link to the rest of the world, some people, who are most kind, some very good at hiding their UNdivine, and most of us, just like you... looking for something worthwhile to do, looking for worth to feel... this OP place is such a saving grace for soo many.... and in This poem, you reach into the center (of Neglect) and drag the pain onto the table for Reader to see, simply and effectively. !!

I know the pain that people these days can endure... It's a depressing thing. What we see on TV is nothing compared to the reality that actually happens all around us. In my eyes, I look for these things. Unlike others, I do not ignore the reality that The Brady Bunch is a joke. There is no way anyone can have such a perfect family. There is hell on earth, abuse, and it's so real.

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) American poet.
