Pretense
I gaze upon your tender brow
Tears slowly flowing down
Eyes in mist, no need to speak
I prayed, then dared to kiss your cheek
Hand in hand, gently bound
Weakened by a tender touch
Too little too late, my lot as such
Yet thankful for a friend I’d found
Lost in a blanket of heart’s content
You are a living mystery
Reclining back to pretend
That now you are a closer friend
Sighs escape an unlocked heart
An open mind is light on hasp
I’ll know the cost of honesty’s art
Decades later, slow to grasp
