Pretty Mouth

Poem Commentary

I wrote this for my dad. He is always angry and finding ways to make me feel bad about myself. He says my mouth is so pretty when I'm not arguing... I guess I have a reason to though. Why else would I do it?

Pretty Mouth

My anger for you rises to the surface,
revealing tender veins and nerves.
My eyes are polluted,
and my soul is stained.
But on I stand
for your entertainment.

Sometimes I wonder,
if you will loosen the chains
and the cuffs around my battered wrists.
The heat from your breath stings me,
and electric pulses of anxiety jolt through the air.

You are a beast
the way you chuckle and
toast to those who aren't there.

Little do you know that
You are all alone in your sick little game.

As you make a fool of me, and yourself.

My anger for you rises to the surface, revealing tender veins and nerves. I can feel the emotion. When I read your work I feel as if I am there, witnessing your exact emotion. Good work.

"My anger for you rises to the surface, revealing tender veins and nerves. My eyes are polluted, and my soul is stained. But on I stand for your entertainment"— this phrase, this entire poem, has blown me into another universe with its poetic power and lyrical sadness. Your heart is a room that breathes such hauntingly beautiful poetry. WOW!

If this is a parent you are talking about, remember that they had parents who probably did the same thing to them. Try to be sweet even when they are sour. You will find, when you are no longer living at home they will actually become your friends. But usually...NOT until then. Also: Then you will be glad you have them, so don't burn any bridges! The sad thing is that not long after you finally have what you've always wanted (their love and friendship) they die. Stinks, I know. You are quite a poet Miss B.

Aww... Thank you so much. I do love my parents, and I try to take advantage of the sweet time I have with them now. Sometimes they make that hard to do though... But I know they mean well. And I love them with all my heart. I dread the day that they leave this earth forever...

Poetry is what gets lost in translation.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
