Poem Commentary

More random thoughts, than poetry.  Advice to myself, maybe?  I wrote this when I was about to turn 25.  The words still ring true.

RaNDoM THouGHTS...

As I am approaching a 1/4 century old
I am really beginning to feel my age.
I sit & reflect on things sometimes.
Just pondering them in my head.
I have learned a lot in my life on this Earth,
But I know there is still so much I do not know.
Time changes things.
Much like the tide of the ocean,
whisking away whatever used to lay on the sand.
Just like it was never there.
The future is the great unknown.
I often wonder what it will hold.
I know that the things I do today are shaping my tomorrow.
I try to watch my temper.
People say things in anger that they really don't mean.
I have learned that laughter is truly the best medicine.
Even on the worst day, if someone can make you smile,
It helps you to know that you'll be alright.  That the world is still turning.
Everybody's family is crazy.
You can hate them for it, or you can accept them for what they are.
I thank God that I was not an only child.
Without my brother I don't think I would be nearly as sane today.
I have learned that children are a true miracle.
God sent them to spread joy to the world.
There is no innocence, no brilliance in the world
That can compare to the light in your child's eyes.
I know now that real love can overcome anything.
It's not always sunshine & roses, but sometimes it's stormy.
You can either let that scare you off, or you can learn to dance in the rain.
When you really love someone nothing else matters, you will see a way through.
The advice of elders is usually correct.
They have been there, done that, seen it all.
Talk to an old person.  Listen to their stories.
Cherish your grandparents.  And your parents.
They will not be around forever & you will miss them dearly when they are gone.
The most valuable thing you can give someone is your time.
You'd be suprised all the things people remember about you.
Little things that you didn't even notice.
Write down how you feel at different points in your life.
It's nice to reflect on your memories & see how far you've come.
Take pictures incessantly.  Of everyone you know.
You will be amazed how much they mean to you later on down the road.
Don't ever hesitate to do something
just because you're scared of what other people might think.
If you really want to do it & you don't, you may not get the chance again.
*
Don't regret anything you've ever done, because it made you who you are today.
I remember being young, wishing & waiting on the day that I'd be all grown up.
Now I am longing to hang on to my youth.  It slips away before you know it.
*
True friends are forever.  The real ones.
It can be 20 years since you last saw them
and there's not even an awkward pause.
You pick up right where you left off.
God has a way of teaching us lessons in life.
Patience, humility, the power of forgiveness.
Some people fight so hard to ignore God
When it is so much easier to rest in his hands.
We always seem to want to do everything ourselves
when there really is someone who can help us.
We just let our stubborn will get in the way.
I am hard on myself for the things I have not done yet with my life.
But at the same time I am scared to death of doing something.
Failure hangs over my head like an impending hurricane.
But I know if I take that leap then I have the chance to fly.
And isn't that chance of flight worth the risk of falling?
The best things in life really are free.
Love, laughter, sunsets, moonlit nights.
Swimming in the creek.  Cool breezes on a sultry summer night.
Friendship.  The beauty of nature.  Hugs.  Salvation.
Everything you do has an impact on the world around you.
Someone somewhere is looking up to you.
Be careful what you say & don't do anything you wouldn't respect someone else for doing.
Easier said than done.
If you ever need a lift, go play outside.
Slip in slide, swing, climb a tree.
Just run around in the yard.
Sunshine is good for the soul.
So is acting like a kid sometimes.
*
You can't help anyone who doesn't want to help themselves.
This goes for many situations.  Especially drugs.
People will take advantage of you for helping them.
But that doesn't mean you should give up on everyone....
You get what you give, things have a way of coming back to you.
*
I feel like my life has just been a flash.
You only get so long on this Earth and then you are gone.
When you think about time & space as infinity, you realize how small you are.
It inspires me to make a difference while I am here.
So I just don't slip away, unnoticed, unremembered.
*
I have realized that you can be successful.
You can be a doctor or a lawyer or even the president.
But the most important job in the world?
Being a parent.  By raising a child, you are shaping the future.
Be the best mama or daddy you can be!
We live in the best country in the world.
People complain about it all the time.
But at least you have that right here.
Complain or protest somewhere else & see what happens to you.
We have freedoms here that a lot of people take for granted.
Clean drinking water, modern conveniences, religious freedom.
We can go anywhere, do anything, and be anything we want to.
Make the best of your today, because tomorrow is never guaranteed.
Pray wholeheartedly, love with wreckless abandon, sing at the top of your lungs.
Don't take anyone or anything for granted.
Know that you are loved.
When you have nothing else, have faith.
And keep chasing your dreams
Until they come true.

If you have a dream, keep chasing it. If you want it bad enough, you will get it for sure. I applaud you for standing up and going for it, even in the face of those who disagree. Keep up the faith in God, and have faith in yourself as well.

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
