Poem Commentary

Funny how life works some times, I had been fustrated the last couple of days because I lost my newest poem called mirror mirror. I was getting the christmas stuff down from the loft when I found my old poem book, I was looking through some of my old hand writtem drafts and found a lost poem I wrote like 17 or 18 years ago. No date on it, but best I can remember, I think I was like 14 or 15 when I wrote this.

Redemption

Withering souls in a sea of darkness,
Drowning in the frozen night,
No redemption lies in their souls,
Nothing they left in this world can ever make them whole.

Lost forever in the past,
Waiting to exhale at last,
Death has struck upon this day,
Longing for their rightful way.

Shear terror chills the waters so still,
Lonely hearts to kill,
Screams of utter agony once wept,
Only in our hearts are the kept.

Wandering endlessly into the eternal night,
Praying for just a glimpse of light,
Rushing blood spilt into the sea,
Nothing but God can set them free.

A new freedom they shall see,
No longer lost in a prison of time they are to be,
He said upon them "Awaken the lost souls of the sea",
"Pour your hearts in the power of me, here lies the eternal key".

True redemption lies in the light of the Son,
Glistening from the purity of the One,
Upon the moon in the dreary eve,
Their longing memories we still receive.

For their memories lie in our hearts,
And it is here that their salvation starts,
Freedom from their prison of time upon the morrow,
Never again shall they live in tears of sorrow…

Such opposite ends of the spectrum are this poem and Mirror Mirror! Where I found Mirror Mirror disturbing, I find this one a symbol of hope. How strange they were written so many years apart...and I keep thinking to myself the time the poems were written should be reversed. Your writing is profound and thought provoking.

not reversed in the least, in truth it is the wiseman who can see deep enough into themselves as to see both the light and the darkness, in truth to know only one side or the other is to know only half of we we are. To truely know thyself one must know both and find a balance, not saying the balance has to be equal, not in the least. My spirit lives and reigns in the power and light of the Lord's grace, yet I never forget the power that the darkness can hold over our mind and body. To ignore the darkness and pretend it doesn't exist is to give it power and to become vulerable to it's illusions. Mirror mirror was not meant as a literal translation, nor was redemption, funny how they go together in someways even though they were written so many years apart. Food for thought my friend. Thanks so much for commenting and your very insightful words of wisedom, thank you! Purity of the soul, journey well!!! with grace and humility ANGEL

I absolutely agree....one has to recognize that both light and darkness exist within in their soul in order to choose their path Maybe I misinterpreted Mirror Mirror by taking it too literally...however after rereading both I was still left with the impression that the focus of Mirror Mirror was dwelling on the darkness almost obsessively to the point of hopelessness, where in Redemption the focus was on the new found realization that victory over darkness was real and obtainable. (I don't usually get this involved in figuring out the deep underlying meaning behind poems , BUT many poems I've read on this site seem to be genuine soul-baring expressions of what is currently happening in the writer's life....and I felt compelled to write some words of encouragement... I realize now it was an introspective expression of poetic creativity. With that said you without a doubt should be very proud that your writing is so convincing to the reader!

How would this poem change if it were changed for the poet Grito? It is an interesting question, yes?

Indeed an interesting question to ponder, such is the true power of poetry. We each see and relate to a poem differently, based on the unique persepective that we have, we each create our own interpretation based on this persepctive. As such one poem can often mean many things to many different people. Glad you enjoyed this write and that for you it had such a deep and profound meaning... Thanks so much for reading and commenting as it is always grealty appreciated and welcomed! Purity of the soul, journey well!!! with grace and humility ANGEL

I just read Grito passed away. Then I sat down to read this. I wist there were a way to transition a reader from wherever there mind is, into the new thought at hand. I think I am going to work on that. That is what this poem has brought me; incentive to find a way to transition the reader into the current poem.

Didn't know Grito personally but I am saddened by the lose to portry community, as I have heard he was a great poet and friend to many... I am honored and humbled that you were able to get so much from this old little poem I found in a shoe box, LOL. Thanks as always my friend for the read and the thoughtful review! not sure how talented I was at that age, but I certainly wrote with alot of passion and heart, I poured out my naked soul for all to see and in the heart of the abyss I found the purest of all light. Some people are born old souls! Good work, for sure, at fourteen or fifteen!!!

needless to say I wasn't the average teenager, LOL. I was just a tad bit out there, like in my own universe at times, but in being outside of the box of illusions and lies, one can often find the real truth in the darkness, and see through the fog with crystal clear perfection. Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
