    My father told me when I was young that my Blackfeet name is 'Running Buffalo'. This subject is important to me as it should be for everyone.

           “Running Buffalo”

     

    My name is Running Buffalo

    For buffalo ran through our valley

    The day I was born

     

    My time was 1786

    When life was free

    When life was clean and pure

     

    Our clan is the Bloods

    Of the Blackfeet

    Our brothers the Piegan

     

    We lived in a vast area

    Including Canada and Montana

    We were free and natural

     

    Hunting when we needed

    Fishing when we needed

    Respecting nature always

     

    Blue were the mountains

    And hills

    Green were the trees

     

    Green were the valleys

    We lived in

    And wandered through

     

    We treasured Napi’s bounty

    Treated it with respect

    Living harmoniously with all

     

    With Napi’s heaven above us

    We were free and happy

    Our souls were clean and pure

     

    I have seen Wounded Knee

    What happened there

    What still happens there

     

    I have seen Moccasin Flat

    What happens there

    What still happens to all tribes

     

    From Napi’s hunting grounds

    I have seen white men

    Destroy all they touch

     

    They do not seem to

    Respect nature

    They do not hunt or fish

     

    All tribes have

    Their Wounded Knees

    Their Moccasin Flats

     

    All will die

    Before white eyes finish

    From hate and greed

    All will die

     

    My name is Running Buffalo
