SCARLET RIBBON

SCARLET RIBBON

  Scarlet ribbon
tied about her auburn
hair,
flowing summers dress
gently swaying with
each step,
sad
brown eyes
mirror the agony within,
five years of happiness,
now; all that remains
is a void
slowly filling with
numbing pain.

A scarlet ribbon
tied about her soft
hair,
a tear rolling down
her cheek,
the telegram was short
“A roadside blast
was to blame.”
The remains will be
sent home on a plane.

A grateful nation
expresses its deepest regret.

The scarlet ribbon
the kind that he liked
her to wear
was tied around her
auburn hair.

With each step the will
to survive is
laid aside,
until nothing is left
but to ask why?

The leap from the bridge
was brief,
all that remains
is the numbing pain
of the
nations deepest regret.

Very poignant description of what happens during war and how it tears at the fabric of our families and society. It captures so much with few words. Great write!

oh my freind you have been walking in my dreams beautiful and sad poem

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
