Sentiment for a Daughter

Poem Commentary

Just trying to figure out to say to my daughter as she enters a new chapter in her life...having graduated law school, waiting results of the bar exam, contemplating children, and I am sure wondering why her mom and dad got divorced...

Sentiment for a Daughter

                        Sentiment for a Daughter

One day, you’re gonna wake up….and see,
            that the oldest of the old…is me.
You will not be twenty-four anymore,

And the person you will see in the mirror is me.

One day, you’re going to realize

            I have not been your enemy;

I have just been trying to open your eyes

            So that you will be all you can be.

One day, you’ll seek the history..

            that you would rather now deny

and wish you could change your story;

            For I have wished the same, my child.

But, that can never be.

One day, you will be able to discern

            the goodness from the bad.

And then and only then will you recognize

that perfection…

 is only for the starry eyed.

One day as you are living,

            you will wake up and see

that this is the universal lesson
             given to you and me.

Love given returns. That's the only perfection I know. Thank you.

Ahhh, hummm, what is perfection if it is only for the starry eyed; and yet I feel creation itself is perfection which seems to be for everyone. Maybe it's distortion and not perfection you are speaking about. that times we feel we must make things perfect when in fact they are perfect already. That we want things to meet our personal needs rather than to see that all life has needs. I do agree with the first part of the poem. If age tells us anything at all; it is things are bound to change. But can we be so sure our reflection in time will be our children's reflection in time when their needs will be far different than ours in so many ways. just a thought// A poet friend// RH Peat

Thank you for reading, Robert and for your kind words.

Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.
