    SHAME

    i'M SITTING AT YOUR TABLE
    STARING AT WALLS OF MEMORIES.
    nOTICING CLEAN PLACES
WHERE MUDDY HANDPRINTS USE TO BE.
    i SMILE AS i REMINISCE
OF ALL THE YEARS GONE BY.
fOR ALL THE TIMES WE LAUGHED
AND ALL THE TIMES WE CRIED.
bUT NEVER THEN COULD i HAVE KNOWN
THE THINGS THAT i KNOW NOW,
AND SEEING THAT YOU MADE IT THROUGH,
    i CAN ONLY WONDER HOW.
    NOW THAT i'M A MOTHER,
    i OFTEN WATCH MY SON.
i NOTICE THAT HE DOES SOME THINGS
    THAT i, MYSELF, HAD DONE.
sO i LAUGH ALOUD AS A TEAR ROLLS DOWN
BECUASE i'M SURE YOU FELT THE SAME.
i KNOW HOW MUCH i HURT YOU
    AND i FEEL SO ASHAMED.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
