Silent Speak

Poem Commentary

That look! There is always "that look." Lovers give it to one another...and magically, the other one is "supposed to know" what it means. Strangers cast their glare at one another, and sometimes communicate in not so non-visual ways. We all do it now and then...silently speak a language that someone else is supposed to hear and/or understand. Like speaking French to an Athabaskan indian, unspoken words are at best, confusing. So don't expect the other person to "hopefully" understand the meaning of your unspoken words, speak as clearly as possible and avoid the awkwardness of miscommunication. Tell someone you love them...instead of just hoping they'll get it. Apologize to that person you wronged; unintentionally. Make known your heart's desire...don't speak in silence.

Silent Speak

Every move speaks volumes,
  alone, sitting on a bench,
no one can hear, or spell,
  or even understand French.

A restaurant’s waiter asks,
  yet seems confused,
baby boy’s cry is comforted,
while he looks on – amused.

Quarterback changes plays,
  audibles, muffled by the crowd,
man drowns in the ocean,
  ’though he screams out loud.

Lovers gaze deep in their eyes,
  hoping to convey,
all that they ever wanted to,
  but just couldn’t say.

Children playing, laughing,
  mom yells, “time for sup,”
parents never listen, only ask,
  “homework done, washed up?”

Deaf teachers practice, preach,
  their pupils try hard,
like stripes on His back,
  their hopes left scarred.

Too often we try, fail,
  speak louder to be heard,
silent speak is not easy,
  try using proper words.

This is terrific advice and observation of life. Such a GREAT poem about human behavior ! I really like this one tooooooo.

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) American poet.
