sleepless

sleepless

Sleep when groped

will sluice through your fingers

like mercury

you stare raggedly

around you

willing the parts

to come together

you can not round them up

for the lack of what you have

and as the vibrations still

they drift toward each other

like magnets in a dish

becoming one

becoming whole

and through the bloodshot

you see it

benignly waiting

your arm flies out

fingers like claws

the hunger for sleep

gnawing and corrosive

down comes your palm

so sure you have it

so sure you finally have it

clenching it smugly

til deflated

defeated

you watch it pour through your fingers

like sand through a sieve

and another analogy is born

for the coming hours

sleepless.

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
