Poem Commentary

Wrote this in class after discussing all the soldiers who come home to no one, and the depression they often suffer..alone.

Someone Like You

A boy went to war one day,
Though he wasn't spiritual, he began to pray.
But he didnt pray for safety, like the others seemed to do,
Instead he prayed for someone to care,
Someone like his family, someone like you.

For over a year, the boy was away,
Witnessing the horrors of war, 'most every day.
But not once did he give in, not once did he complain,
Instead he learned to shut out everything,
Learned to ignore the pain.

A boy came back from war one day,
Though he wasn't spiritual, he began to pray.
But he didnt pray for his safe return, like the others seemed to do,
Instead he prayed for someone to be there for him,
Someone like me, someone like you.

I witnessed a casket being lowered today,
I watched as the flag was folded, and carried away.
Upon asking a soldier, why the family didn't attend,
He replied sadly, "Because he took his life,
Something his family couldn't comprehend."

I went to a boy's grave today,
Though I'm not spiritual, I began to pray.
But instead of cursing God for taking him, like the others seemed to do,
I prayed to God to help others like him,
Someone like their families, someone like you.

Nice mix. This was nice to read for a change. After awhile, these poems begin to sound the same. It was nice little change-up!

I really like your use of 5 lines in your verses, which is unusual. The intent of your poem is valid and honest, horrific and yet, so very loving. I well-ed up because of the indifference of Religious beings who seem to be missing the compassion of prayer, God and forgiveness of another's weakness upon themself. How sad to be so lost to not see genuine need... your poem is one that will stay with me for awhile... and I like your poem.

Suicide is a daily and hourly human tragedy throughout the world. It is even more perturbing that many young men who were compelled to serve in war, are unable to re-adjust to normal life , and resort to suicide as the way out of their disorientation. The tragic story is clearly well told by you, Kary , in five line stanzas of a.aabcb mode. You obviously ran into a problem of a too lengthy third line, thus disirupting the cosmetics of your poem. .The ideal is not to exceed seven feet or fourteen syllables in verse. My rating is 9.for all -round good poetic qualities, except your third line.

Enjoyed the style you chose to write this thought provoking poem in. Excellent piece.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
