    Song of a Spiritual Agnostic

    God smiled and laughed

    God wept and cried

    God had my face

    God was in my hide

    And all the sun rays warming

    all the cold winds blowing

    every mosquito bite

    and each lovely sight

    every day

    and every night

    God talked

    and was there

    and I knew it.

     

    And I still know it.

     

    In every perfection

    and every deformity

    there is God

    infinitely

    infinitesimally

    ingrained

    in conformity with what must be

    and is

    always was and will be

    reality is God

    don't you see?

     

    If you don't

    that's ok

    you are part of Him

    Her

    or It

    anyway.

    Well done pal, food for thought... for those who know how to eat it though. GOD... is He/She/It really a He/She/It...? Food for thought for all. Good poem.

    While I liked the poem, I cannot fathom not knowing if my God is a he, she, or a it! I think myself far to smart and crafty to just let life slide by not knowing who He is, or where I stand with Him. He gave us a book for goodness sakes! And, said "Learn of Me."

    That's a book written by men. Why is He a man? That makes absolutely no sense to me. Is a penis an indication of God?

    I can't seem to retract that last statement, which was extreme. The idea is there, but it sounds peevish. Sorry icu2 . . . I am not religious. I do not trust books or people telling me what to believe because my own sense of spiritual connection is stronger than words. I don't believe God is a boy or girl. That's too narrow a definition.

    Beautifully written...is there anything else to say? Nothing to argue about...God simply IS...(there, here) whether we're looking or not nicely done

    While I don't understand how "agnostic" applies to the content of the poem so much, I do very much enjoy your writing style!

    Good point. It isn't very agnostic sounding. Invoking "God" in any writing is like dropping an atomic bomb and this one does it a lot. Lamely, all I can say is that I don't prescribe to a religion and have assigned the notion of God as a catch all for the wonderment we feel when marveling at the world and our lives. Recently I read that this used to be called Deist or Universalist. I thought it might be Buddhist and still don't know. In the end, I'm not so sure there is a sentient being at the end of the rainbow. But I like to think there is something good behind it all, just because it's easier to talk to a probably imaginary friend, than none at all . . .

    I enjoy spiritual pieces knowing that not all people praise the same God I do. I find there to be a huge difference between being spiritual and being religious, although I don't know that I could explain it to another if I tried. I did enjoy this piece though!

    Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.
