Step Back

    Poem Commentary

another one of my darker poems, but it has to do with choices in life.

    Step Back

Looking over the edge are we?
    Tell me what you see.
    Glistening lights, heights,
The whirrs and blurs of the city?

    You look far away,
    What have you done?
    Nothing you say.
    What's done is done?

    Is it really?
    Must you go on?
    Perhaps this is silly,
But you behave like a child.

Life hangs in the balance you know.
This choice that you must make.
Is it really worth your life?
Is that a risk your willing to take?

Step back from that ledge my friend,
Just one step back is all.
Think of what your giving up.
    Weigh it before you fall.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
