Summer Day

Poem Commentary

This was inspired by the songs my Paw-Paw has written recently; I even put the words to a similar tune. Yes, I intended this to be a song - a country/western-ish song. This is strange for me since I absolutely hate country music save for a few pieces. I dedicate this poem to my Paw-Paw, who lost his wife of 30 or 40 or so years this past March. He's still terribly depressed although he tries to hide it, and I wish I could take his pain away. Almost all of his songs are sad now.

Summer Day

It was a day like any other
So warm and so clear
Like any other summer
As the solstice drew near
And like any other summer
The day lived on long
Fading out like the chorus
Of a favorite song
And as the shadows grew darker,
And no sunbeams were left,
My baby, oh my darlin'
Drew her very last breath

Goodbye my sweet baby
Goodbye my sweet love
Oh everyone knows
Angels belong up above

One day I'll reach you
In that heavenly blue
Just wait a while longer
I'll be there real soon

It's been a while since
And I still feel so sad
How was I to know
It would hurt this bad?
Death doesn't discriminate;
All is eventually lost -
Claimed like autumn's harvest
To winter's early frost
Now the months grow warm
And sleepless here I lay
Wishing for the rest
Of a nice summer day
And when the day fades
Into ever-growing night
Oh, I will be ready
To follow the light

Goodbye my sweet baby
Goodbye my sweet love
Oh everyone knows
Angels belong up above

One day I'll reach you
In that heavenly blue
Just wait a while longer
I'll be there real soon

Just wait a while longer
I'll be there real soon

Sad write, like the repeating lines does seem to carry a melody as you read. Nothing more sad than to loose a child. 10 from me.

I appreciate your comment. It's always painful to lose a loved one.

I don't like western music either, but I do like this poem/song. In my head though it's a different tune. lol

Like you, I'm not a huge fan of country music... but Smaffa... this is INCREDIBLE! The emotion and sheer heart that you've put into this is amazing. I have no clue how to do it, but you should consider shopping this around to try to get it recorded by an artist. VERY nicely done!

Thank you so much! I was thinking about getting it copyrighted; maybe someone would like to sing it.

I would definitely explore that... this write is worth it :)
