Super A's Casa...A Christmas Poem

Poem Commentary

As a child, the holidays were a time of gathering family around the table. While the children played, the women would cook and bake. The men would sneak food, and watch the children. After Thanksgiving until New Year's day, my mother's kitchen had great aromas of Southwestern cooking. Tamales, biscochitos, empanaditas(sweet meat and/or fruit turnovers) would be only a small sample of the wonderful aromas that I remember. Since becoming a mother and grandmother, this time of year is when I try to gather family members together to share the recipes, tastes and aromas of days gone by.

Super A's Casa...A Christmas Poem

In the month of December, throughout Super A's casa,

She's looking for help to make tamales, to help make and spread out the masa.

The grandchildren all hang the Christmas lights with care,

While putting up decorations, here, there and everywhere.

Empanaditas and stuffed sopapillas

Will be a treat, not just plain flour tortillas.

We'll be drinking hot chocolate, because it is cold,

Looking out at the snow never gets old.

Stacking wood for the fireplace, now that's a chore.

To keep the house warm *PLEASE* close the door.

For those who want to help Super A make and spread out the masa,

Just report to Super A's casa!

Yea!! Parrttty!! I'll help with making tamales and any other food, as long as I get to eat some of the food. =D My Grandmother was always cooking food during the holidays, when I was a kid, I miss that. I would help out and that is how I learned how to cook. Now I need beef empanadas, must get my Cousin to make some. lol

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
