    Swamp Alley Joe

    Deep down in the everglades
    where creatures rarely go,
lived a big old ill tempered man
    named Swamp Alley Joe.

    He wrestled with the gators
and he tangled with the snakes,
to live in Florida's decaying swamps
he had just what it takes.

I was fishing in relaxing peace
when I heard a mighty roar.
A deep chill crawled up my spine
    that shook the airboat floor.

He was wrestling a big one
when I walked up on the ground.
He then threw me the gator
    and said,"Why don't you go a round?"

I jumped away from the gator
    and ran behind a tree.
I was thinking, "I'll get you old man,
if the gator does'nt get me!"

I was hanging from a tree branch
when the gator walked on by.
He was dizzy from the wrestling.
Now I know why gators cry.

    I smiled at my Grandfather
and said, "You are my dearest friend.
Keep your gators to yourself! I'll be seeing you again!"

I think my Grandfather is really great.
I love him, I really do!
But he has this habit of
    throwing gators.
    I left!
    Well, wouldn't you?

A nice tribute to your grandfather and a nice lighthearted poem. Your grandfather sounds like an interesting person, perhaps quirky to most people, but then I find unique individuals like this fascinating.Another great poem.

A nice rhythm and flow, not to mention a really light funny read, makes a change from all the heavy stuff. And you look great for 88 :o)

This poem reminds me of my child hood days in Louisana. I loved seeing the big gators in ther swamps. thanks Pam

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
