    Poem Commentary

Here is one for law and order.

    Sweetcakes, Tarts, and Muffintops

    Sweetcakes, tarts, and muffintops

    Each one has its rules

    And ignoring sacred recipes

    Is the path of fools

    For sweetcakes, tarts and muffintops

    Come not by accident

And a monkey for their baker

    Would set bold precedent

    We know that tasting pulchritude

    Is quite constrained by task

If you throw out all the recipes

You might as well not ask

    Don’t ask that such distractions

    Enliven your bleak day

    A randomized confection

    Would almost certainly dismay

    Too much salt, or flour

    Would bar success for sure

And that lump of sodden crumbcake

    You might scarcely just endure

    I wonder then at moderns

    The thinkers of today

Who ignore the rules for happiness

And are surprized to meet dismay

    We’ve shelved the ten commandments

    Or offered just a glance

When we might find real fulfillment

If we’d give them one more chance

    For sweetcakes, tarts, and muffintops

    Require their recipe

And if they need such for beauty

It’s not errant, so do we.

It amazes me that even a muffin can conjure such clever poetry. Incredulous! ginga

The muffin was the "clever" misdirection to an illustration. The poem's essence is nothing trivial. Harv

The recipe of life requires great care in gathering the proposed ingredients, their correct measure and tempered precautionary skill to assure desireable outcome: so many come through half-baked, or burnt. You've written with wit and wisdom: may they never part! Applause building!

Yeah, I'm with Londo. Definitely not what I was expecting when I saw the title, but I enjoyed this little bit of inspiration. We could all use the reminder from time to time that there are rules to follow to make the recipe worthy ;) Thanks for sharing, Harv!

i am hoping the power of euggestion is matched by the power of an apt example. Harv

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
