    The Ballad Of Shine

This is the ballad, of a cat named Shine.

Had a pocket full of money, a bottle of wine

It was a Friday night, and had just got paid
went to Look for action, wanted to get laid
Went looking for o gal Big Legged Sally,
when he heard noises, coming from the alley.
He won't nosy but out of curiosity.
just had to take one look and see?
Shine eyes lit up, as he looked around
saw lotsa money scattered on the ground,

couldn’t believe what he saw, he looked twice

    Signifying monkeys, were shooting dice.
A mind told him, leave them monkeys alone
While you still got money, you oughta move on
It had been two months, since he got laid

Money or loving, how heavy it weighed

Shine manned up; used the right head
    was walking away, til one monkey said;

broke ass Shine, wanna borrow some money

tho he grinned, didn’t find it that funny

Ever body knew he, was a hellava cat
why did this monkey, diss ‘im like that.

He took his bottle, broke the seal on his wine

Took a big swig, then belched one time
He wiped his mouth, then he spoke
Do you damn monkeys think I'm  broke?
He picked up the bones, put his money down

Took a lil' nip, then offered it around
Alright you monkeys, jive ass clowns

Dig in yo’ pockets, I'm fixing to get down
Took the bones, cupped 'em four three

I'll teach ya‘ll monkeys, bout messing with me
Shine threw the dice, they bumped the wall
snake eyes, he head one monkey call
They loaded up, but he didn't mind
He rubbed the dice, then took his time

He got off his knees, brushed off the sand

Turned his back, and peed on his hands

One monkey asked, say man what’s up?

He grinned and said, brings good luck
Shoot the damn dice, the other one said
Let‘s bet mo, if your ass ain’t scared.
He would’ve cussed, but he won’t like that
he’d get on a roll and pay em all back
He rolled the bones, up against the wall
Six! He heard the fading monkey call!
Shine grew confident, and threw the dice
Six one time baby, three, three, twice.
It didn’t surprise him, it came as he called
til a monkey yelled out, didn't hit the wall

Shine looked at him, said you’re fulla shit

The others monkeys agreed, only one  hit.
He glared at them and rolled again,
didn‘t bother him at all, a six four ten.
Gonna enjoy ya’ll money he grinned and said

I'll think about ya'll when I'm gettin laid.
He stood up, shook his tail around.
winked at them and again knelt down

Fading monkey put new dice in the game
Shine smiled and said, nothing's gonna change

I’m break up this game, ya'll have to quit
    Not gonna leave ya'll,
    with one red cent.
reached in his pocket, took out every dime
His whole week-end, was on the line,

Come on you monkeys, old Shine said

Dig in yo’ pocket, we’ll see who’s scared
Shine won’t saved, but he always believed
what man asked for, he would be receive
He mumbled to himself, looked to heaven
Lord please, don't let me roll no seven
He grabbed the bones, and shook 'em around.
Threw 'em to the wall, they hit the ground
First he grinned and then slowly frowned
Cause one six was up, the other spinning round
Oh how Shine hated, when it came to a stop
six at the bottom, meant one was on top.
He bit his lips, as he looked up to heaven,
Muttered to himself a m--- effing seven.

The monkey asked Shine with a great big grin

Now man what was that you said again

He picked up those bones, didn’t look twice

Didn't need to be told, they were loaded dice

He got a funny feeling, and felt real bad

Nobody had to tell ’im, he'd just been had
He got off his knees, dusted his pants off

Every cent in the world, he'd just lost

He took the bottle, slung in the alley

then went looking for Big Legged Sally

Sally asked Shine, man where’ve you been?

I've waited on your ass since half past ten

She took him by the chin looked in the eyes

She wanted the truth, not some alibis

The story he told, she didn’t find funny,

somebody held him up, took all of his money

It was my damn money, he heard her say

I know your dumb ass gambled it away

your eyes may shine, your teeth may grit

But a good time tonight you ain't gonna git

He took her hand, pleaded his case this way

work with me I'll throw you out come pay day

She smiled at Shine, to hell with you man.

Look mammy- jammer, you don’t understand?

I stay in business, cause I don’t give credit

It’s In God we trust, or just forget it

It suddenly hit Shine, when Sally moved on

Should have gotten laid, and went on home.

The moral of this story, if there is one

And been that way since time begun

Nothing in the world, is without a price

Whether you’re getting laid , or shooting dice

If it’s Friday night, you’ve just got paid

Don’t gamble with money you need to get laid.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.
