THE BEST IS YET TO COME

The best is yet to come
I know that I am not done
There are battle to fought and victory to be won
A few more rising and setting of the sun
The tests I will not shun
...Sometime they feel like a ton
But I will overcome
My friends will be stun
When I am finally done
We will rejoice and have fun
Over the battle I have won
Over the mountain I have overcome

This poem is like a chant and that snares the readers attention and carries us along. The use of rhyme like this can be tricky, but here, what comes before the rhyme is so compelling that the rhyme becomes part of the "chanting" In the rhyme only twice is a word used, "done" being the word. If the reader looks at those two lines we see that they are counter points. These techniques make this poem a well crafted one. The symbolism here is ripe. We are told in the title that something best is in the future, but as is in life little that is best arrives easily. Here there is a struggle, a battle and a goal of victory. We are shown that it takes time, "A few more rising and setting of the Sun." The voice tells us that "I will not shun" or step away from the battle despite the heavy weight of it. The voice realizes that even friends wouldn't do what the voice has. The voice then makes the statement that it will be victorious and that we will be invited to share in the joy of it. The use of mountain to describe the challenge of this effort. If you've ever climbed a mountain it is imposing and certainly something to overcome. A great read.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
