The Caterpillar

  • Been on a hiatus for awhile, but I'm back and have the itch to write some poetry.

The Caterpillar

she was a simple little caterpillar
a little worm with fuzz
and all she ever wanted
was to be better than she was
she didn’t like her life
like she was living in a lie
and all she ever dreamed of
was learning how to fly
she felt so unhappy
not alive or free
and everything she ever knew
was in that little tree
she watched the birds and butterflies
and how they flew around
oh how she envied them
stuck there on the ground
she didn’t like her self
or the little bug she was
she felt that just a caterpillar
could never fall in love
who would ever want me
a little ball of fuzz
but what she didn’t realize
is that wasn’t who she was
for early one morning
from a very long sleep
she awoke to discover
that she had sprouted wings
but she didn’t feel different
in fact she felt the same
for who she truly was
on the inside didn’t change
and then it finally hit her
as the birds were burst in song
while she wallowed in her pity
she was a butterfly all along

very apt analogy, you amaze me...you are a light shining in a dark place, the kindest light...not all harsh and glaring. I love it!

A great imagery you managed to create! You have managed to reach the reader through this piece. "She was a butterfly all along" Brilliant ending! Great job!

Thanks,I was trying to relate this to our lives and that we are who we are inside. What we look like on the outside doesn't matter. She didn't look like a butterfly, but the beauty inside of her did all along. And there's no sense in wishing we are something different, we need to make the best of who we are, because we can't change that.

Cool poem. Are butterflies insects? - It doesn't really matter, I guess. I liked the theme, rhyme and scheme. Thanks!

Butterflies and moths are arthropods and insects. They are members of the Lepidoptera family. :))

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
