Poem Commentary

This poem was written for a mother of two very challenging teenagers who I worked with years ago. Working as a family therapist, there is a fine balance. I had to connect to all family members and hear each party's perspective. While connecting and experiencing a heart-to-heart connection with each, I also had to be able to challenge each in the areas necessary for the family to make growth. Children are wonderful for placing the blame for all their faults on to the parents. In treatment, parent's often feel that they are the one's criticized and blamed as well. I applaud this mother's efforts to be real with me and her ability to accept feedback and make progress in responding to her girls. They have a great relationship now, as the girls are now mother's themselves.

The Cry of a Mother's Heart

A mother's tears,
the softest cry
inaudible, undetectable
without the human eye

I have seen your tears,
even those you have not shown
and I hope that in knowing this,
you've felt a little less alone

We haven't always seen eye to eye,
heart to heart with hand in hand
but in your sharing, showing
I think we've both come to understand.

It is only through the struggle,
taking the challenge, facing past sins
it's only through sticking it out
that a mother's real strength begins

Don't lose that strength or forget those tears
they have surely brought us here,
When things get tough remember
God won't give more than we can bare.

Thank you! It's been years since I've worked with this family but they will forever be in my heart!

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) American poet.
