The Gift 4-5-06

One day as I was walking
I met a man who gave me a gift
He handed me a plain wooden box
As he did he told me that inside I would find
all that I could ever truly want or need

I bowed and thanked him for his kindness

After he had gone I chanced to peek inside
to my astonishment the box was empty

I sat in the shade under a tree
and thought about this for quite some time
and as I did
I looked about myself

Ever so slowly

I realized that the man was truly wise beyond measure
and he had indeed given me a most precious gift.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
