THE HOUSE ON THE HILL

THE HOUSE ON THE HILL
(Dori Wheeler © 29sept09)

The creepy old house on the hill
Children were enticed
But afraid of it still

Still of the night
Was when there were any signs of life
It really could give you quite a fright

Fright of things unknown
You wouldn't think of going there
Especially alone

Alone is how she preferred to live
People wondered if she were a vampire or witch
Really she had so much to give

Give the children one hell of a scare
Sometimes that felt brave
But wouldn't knock if the dare

Dare to be different she didn't mind
Misunderstood is what she was
Marching to a beat of a different kind

Kind of house up on that hill
It really gave you the creeps
Really gave you a chill

Chill up and down your spine
Goosebumps and hair standing on end
Making you quiver, wishing you were fine

Fine is the way she would live
Only she slept by day and was up all night
To sleep like other's, what she would give

Give by night not by day
To The God and The Goddess
What would they say?

They say that they just don't understand
The noises the heard at night
Maybe they should demand

Demand the quarters she would not do
But she would politely invite them
Especially on a moon that was blue

Blue moon, full moon, waxing, waning or dark
Earth, air, fire and water
Solitary, but not lonely, she would embark

Embark on her craft when the moon was high
For she really was a witch
If they knew, they would sigh

Sigh at the thought of a witch this day and time
They don't understand
It's no longer a crime

A crime is what they would think for sure
Spells and potions they fear
Discrimination is what she would endure

Endure what she must, she didn't care
Just another form of preying
If they let her, she would share

Share her potions and teas
If they only trusted her
It would put them at ease

At ease in the creepy house on the hill
She danced and chanted all night
Invoking  The God andThe Goddess at will!

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
