The Lyrids

Poem Commentary

I wanted to share this experience-my husband and son were going to get up with me, but I could not wake them-I also wanted to get outside for 2 a.m, but didn't get situated until about 3 a.m..

The Lyrids

Had to wake early
Lyrids Meteor Shower
Worth waking up for

Slippers and nightgown
with a warm jacket needed
Look up at the sky

Three a.m. to four
Watched five moving cross the sky
Very exciting!

Alone in the dark
Feet dampened by morning dew
Hear birds wakening

Sneezing and freezing
Went back inside to warm up
tried to sleep some more

Settled back in bed
Dreamt about the dark skyscape
lit with stars twinkling

Thank you, Earthly, for returning memories. In 1966 my science teacher told us to get up early to see the Leonid meteor shower. Mother woke me and I was amazed. The sky was on fire and not a black spot to been seen, rain of fire. "Sky and Telescope", in 1967. reported over 144,000 meteor an hour were seen to the naked eye (I believe there were many more, in my area, as I watch this from my window in the house and they were coming strait down at only a slight angle). I will never see such a thing like that again. Farmer were in there fields for the harvest the next day and report finding meteor everywhere in their fields in our small county. Thank you. Love, peace and freedom, Olan

Nice write and written so that the reader can almost feel as if they were there observing, well done.

I've watched a meteor shower or two, myself, and got up at an ungodly hour to do it, too. I did get a kick out of it, but I'm more partial to comets, though ha ha. Excellent capture of the moment!

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
