    Poem Commentary

This is a companion poem to "Good Little Children" as this tells what else was happening at the hospital that night.

    The NIght Dick Driver Died

    Dick Driver was a trucker

Had a wife, and how he loved her

She loved him back ,and loved him well

Had five kids that all were swell.

Dick was just an avarage guy

Unremarkable if you passed him by

Had just one habit he’d regret

    How he loved a cigarette!

Wife and kids went off to church

But Dick you see, was in the lurch

No offense at all this Jesus stuff

It just to him it seemed enough

Enough to drive his reefer van

And overtime when e’er he can

    Surely God would not besmirch

A working guy who just skipped church.

But that was before the nagging cough

    Warning omen: take time off

    Better yet, instead of loafing

Toss that pack, and give up smoking.

That’s how Dick went in for tests

Thought he might get in some rest

But when he asked doc for his answer

He just shook his head, “It’s lung cancer.”

Well, his wife, she bravely blinked back crying

But death loomed close, there’s no denying

When she went home to check her brood

Dick was left in a praying mood.

As in the dim light of his room

A sudden radiance lit the gloom

    Adjustment took him just awhile

Then his eyes lit up to Jesus’ smile

Epiphanies change the course of life

And so Dick quickly telephoned his wife

“If God should heal me, I’ll stop work,

And weekly go with you to church.”

That’s when she called my preacher Dad

Inspite of fears, she sounded glad

They’d have a miracle to talk about

Not knowing that his time’s run out.

This all is true, I have not lied

Dick Driver met Christ, the night he died.

I known it since, cause I was there

God still will answer a trucker’s prayer.

And the miracle, was it lost, delayed?

What really happend when Driver prayed?

This much I know, if just the part,

God’s love had changed Dick Driver’s heart.

I think this poem is inspirational because I think God forgives until the end like this poem. Also, I think God sees more than who goes to church and who doesn't. He seen what was in Dick Driver's heart:)

The inspiration comes after we see what was newly implanted in there. Harv
