    The Plan

    With unaffected unity
    I read the daily news.
The past events of here said day
    Formed concrete points of view.

    Except one tactless item,
Of which came quite a shock,
Time crept slowly on and killed
The old man down the block.

Emotion did not flood me out,
    Nor pity strike me blind.
It is best by far to go at once
Than first to go in mind.

I tinkered with the thought awhile
    No matter how it stung.
I just don't want to go that way.
    I plan on dieing young.

The billiard room is filled with saints
    Just killing time to kill.
I don't have time for everything
But someday I think I will.

How did that time slip out of grasp?
    It has tarnished natures plan.
I have watched it turn my newborn son
    Into a full grown man.

I have watched it through the good and bad,
Through all the songs it's sung.
I have watched too long to follow through,
I had planned on dieing young.

This is really thought-provoking. I love the images it conjures up in my head. Good work! What inspired you to write this piece?

Sorry it took so long for me to respond but here goes- I was pregnant with my oldest son when this piece just came to me.(1980) Then, something very, very ironic happened in my life. My oldest son was almost 15 years old in 1995 and was killed in a tragic car crash. I thought perhaps if I posted it on this site that it somehow would provoke the same thoughts into someone else head.

I really love this poem it's deep and touching.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.

Aristotle (384 BC-322 BC) Greek philosopher.
