    The Prison Fence

Atop the prison fence coiled like a snake
The deadly razor wire in silence waits
The lethal barbs make every inmate quake
It is the stalwart sentry at the gates

This metal serpent’s presence is immense
It is a python smothering its prey
Slowly crushing hope at all expense
Any dreams of escape, it’s blades will slay

It is the barrier to freedom’s path
For liberty’s just on the other side
But there are none who could escape its wrath
Should cutting edge with human flesh collide

It’s appetite for people is so great
With it our deepest fears we do sedate

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
