    THE UNKNOWN MAN

The kind old man, lives just across the street,
He's constantly in motion, never misses a beat.
Always with a smile, a wave as you pass,
Did e're I stop to chat, too busy, must cut the grass.

The hustle of existence, takes neighbors far away,
A hundred feet, a hundred miles, travel a minute, you've traveled a day.
Perpetual motion, he's at peace within himself,
Worked till he retired, Didn't grow old as dust on the shelf.

This kind old man after a storm, told me a shingle had blown away,
Thank you I say as the rat race, brings close to another day.
Old school is this man, not forgotten how to be,
Old school is this man, that once was me.

I do not even know his name, entirely without a clue,
Only know we'd be better off, were he me, were he you.
This kind old man knows his time, may be preciously dear,
This kind old man was once young, had nothing to fear.

This kind old man could have been a friend, had I stopped to chat for a while,
Replaced the acknowledging nod, with a warm and friendly smile.
Busy as I was,  I waved as I passed him by,
In my rear view mirror, saw a head shake with a sigh.

This kind old man has now passed, I see him no longer at his door,
That gentle kind old man, shall wave never more.
I never stopped to get his name, share a moment or two,
This unknown man shall someday, turn into me or maybe you!

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
