The Wall

Poem Commentary

One day a year after my father died, I unexpectedly burst into tears. This came pouring out in about half an hour while I alternately cried and scribbled it down.

The Wall

There is a wall around my heart

protecting me from pain.

Though I feel every sorrow,

I have to face tomorrow,

take on the world again.

Supporting those around me

to help them bear their tears

takes strength, you know,

so I don’t show

the pain that hovers near.

My tears are shed in private

much further down the road.

I cannot bear

increasing cares

for those who’d share my load.

Yet every now and then

the wall comes tumbling down.

I never know

when it will go –

in tub, in bed, in town.

So when the tears roll down my cheeks,

don’t worry; I’m okay.

’Twas just a year ago, my dear,

I found that I could say

the things I’ve always kept inside

well-hidden from the light

behind the wall

I’d built so tall….

I’ll start again tonight.

Thank you. I thought you might understand; as Olan said, there are similarities to your crumbling fortress. :)

I really can't add an original idea here since I find I agree with those opinions contained in the comments below. I like your poem.

Like Olan, I too just was about to go and add that I liked Regina's poem, The walls..................interesting. Yours has a Divine quality about it........it speaks so gently, and strong at the same time. I like it...............................................gogant

I don't know about divine. And the strength is mostly only on the outside. Thank you for your comment! :)

Ah, the last line is the "kicker", well done, my friend. I just read a poem by Regina2 about walls; you two should compare notes. Love, peace and freedom, Olan.

I have to rebuild my wall - I'm vulnerable without it. Poetry is as close as I get to letting people see how I really feel. Yet for some reason I felt the need to explain that I'm not really emotionless - I'm just repressing as hard as I can, so that I can get through the moment. I'll cry later.

Poetry is a healing balm and it, also, strengthens your fortress.

So true ... and I hope this posts as a reply to you, Olan, and not where it looks like it's going to try to go!

I have this wall also lost my husband 7 years ago and i only let it down once an awhile a wonder ful poem thanks for sharing

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
