Thirty-three to Twelve

    Thirty-three to Twelve

A football score in the 4th quarter

Shared between a father and his son

The time ticking off the clock

    Their favorite team had won

    Four quarters, sixty minutes

    Those touchdowns they did share

On a cool Sunday winter afternoon

With the cool wind in the air

    Thirty-three to Twelve

    Not a football score

    Number of months and days

    A love shared, between

    A father and his son

    Father time,

    Why did you take him?

You took him away from me

    No time to say goodbye

    His time just to short

    I would have taken overtime

    Just to hear his voice

    So when you are together

On a cool Sunday winter afternoon

The cool wind in the air

Whether your team wins or loses

    Tell him while he’s there

    That you love him

    Father time

    I have no memories

    09/15/58-06/27/61

This poem was written sometime ago at a period when my life was in shambles.(2001/2002)  It had to be renamed because of ultimately getting his date of departure wrong, now being titled correctly. His death has always been troubling for me. Never having children but recently having a grand nephew born on my 50th birthday, it is a reminder of being thankful for what I have. Last Christmas my mother was quick to remind me he was the same age exactly as I was on my 1st Christmas.  My father was in the hospital on my birth, baptism 1st Christmas.  I have no memories as previously said, no pictures at all.

Now I have an opportunity, a grand nephew to fill his heart with love each and every passing year.  To spend time with him on our birthday and anniversary of my dad's death.  As a reminder that time is short..........

09/15/08-06/27/11 he will be the same age as I was

Never shall a day go bye to fill his heart with memories mine just doesn't have.

beautifuly written; sad poignant memory put wonderfuly to verse. The only constructive criticism I could think to offer would be that you start out in one form rhyming; then suddenly change it up. Regardless; beautifuly done and heartfelt.

Poetry can move mountains when hearts listen. Thank you.

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
