To be a Soldier

To be a Soldier

To be a Soldier...
You must be strong, yet have the courage to face your weaknesses
you must be genuine, yet have the courage to act on your strengths
You must be a servant, yet have the courage to lead when it's time
You must obey, yet have the courage to follow your conscience
You must stand, and find the courage to remain standing when common sense calls you to flee
You must give, when there's nothing left to give and find the courage to give a little more
You must value your buddies life, and have the courage to risk your life for his.
You must believe in the intrinsic value of freedom, when you are far from free.
You must believe in yourself and your buddies in the midst of chaos & destruction, and find the courage to maintain that belief in the face of that destruction
You must face your fears, and find the courage to act despite your fear
You must maintain your humanity in an environment that strips your humanity in a maelstrom of violence
You must believe that DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY has meaning well beyond the power of mere words to convey
these you must do, To be a Soldier

I have you to thank, I read "Forever Soldiers" and I reflected on how scared you are in combat, and how mundane tasks take on a whole new perspective when under fire. I was inspired by that introspection and voila" "To be a Soldier" is the result.

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
