    Poem Commentary

    i wrote this for my dad who had just lost his mother. his dad died several years before. so, through all his hardness, i can't help but think that he had to feel something. who knows? but we never did get close until he retired. then he died.

    TO MY DAD

     i woke up this morning
    with a tear in my eye.
    thinking about the day before.
    slowly, i began to cry.
    God,
    what will i do
    when my parents are gone?
    i'm sure when he heard the news
    for a moment, my father felt alone.
    i depend on them so much
    for my life everyday
    how will i act or live
    when they are gone away?
    sometimes when they are away from home
    and i sit
    in the quiet of the day
    i feel like a child, alone.
    so small and unable to play.
    my Dad and me
    are not very close.
    we never really talked
    when i was young,
    he took me hunting.
    i felt so prowd as we walked.
    i remember, i used to look up at him,
    and wish he would show his love.
    the wink of an eye,
    the squeeze of a hand,
    a gentle pat on the back.
    softly, i sighed.
