    Poem Commentary

Two commentaries on this poem: 1 - This poem is a Double Entendre, which means, a word or phrase having multiple meanings. In the title, Too Blue for One Gold, in use the word "too," meaning - also, to mean too sad, but also, when read, it signifies the number two, because the family only has two daughters who survived the deployment to a war zone. With that, please read commentary 2. 2 - The Witmer Family, from Wisconsin, lost one daughter (one of the twin girls), while all three were deployed, serving in the WSANG. Parents of combat soldiers get a blue star to hang in their window, for each child serving overseas. The Witmer family had three children serving. The blue star becomes gold, when a child is fatally wounded. Sort of seems ironic, which was the catalyst for this poem...irony of what we consider precious.

    Too Blue for One Gold

    The Olympian strives to attain,
the most coveted prize - gold,
while a mother waits in pain,
for three daughters she longs to hold.
Serving in combat for what seemed right,
to foreign lands they did go,
for family and freedom they did fight,
the final outcome they did not know.
    A soldier's parents get blue, I'm told,
a star in the window to hang,
this mother had three, one now gold,
as the bell for one daughter has rang.
A twin lost her right arm,
a sister lost one of three,
trying to make sense of the harm,
       bowed heads, wet cheeks...they grieve.
Dealing with their loss, not just another,
letting go and letting God is tough,
now for this Gold Star mother,
one gold star is more than enough.

Too sad for words, but you seemed to find them. Nice poem.

Thanks Chicken...this was about truth...and a famil, and the words just came to me...I give credit to God for the inspiration...always. Blessings, Randy, Wichita, KS

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
