Poem Commentary

Not ever meant to last.

Transience

The sands of time fall so fast
In the face of Eternity
Humans were never meant to last -
Death so much a certainty

All things fade to shadows grey
Nothing is truly immortal
For some meaning we blindly pray
Before we cross the portal

And in this life that we know
The future seems so far away
Never knowing when we will go,
We learn to live for the day

Someday we will be nothing
Just a memory long since passed
A footnote not worth mentioning -
No, not ever meant to last

I like how you wrote "Nothing is truly immortal For some meaning we blindly pray Before we cross the portal".Very well written!

Its ironic to me that poetry of pain seems to be more beautiful and/or real than its counter part. Its like we don't like pain, but otherwise, what would we be without it? That venture into the unsafe avenue exposes so much. Perhaps pain faces that which sheltered joy fears....but anyway I speak too much. Enjoyed this read. Up front and to the point.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
